Ōhashi High School Cultural Festival - Part III
"Ōhashi High School Cultural Festival - Part II" is the 12th episode of Toradora! and was first aired on December 18, 2008. The screenwriter for the episode was Mari Okada.
The class is busy rehearsing for the play with Haruta directing them. Taiga and her dad start to reconnect and Taiga wants to switch parts with Ami so that her father can see her good side. When Ryuuji tells Minori of them reconciling, Minori gets angry and argues with Ryuuji that Taiga should not have anything to do with her dad; while Ryuuji feels the opposite. Taiga tries to calm things down by making the two shake hands, but Ryuuji walks away angrily. During the festival, Taiga's dad does not show up, and Ryuuji does not apologize to Minori. The play parodies Yuri-sensei being single using the concept of the red string of fate. Taiga is constantly waiting for her father's message, even while on stage. The play is hugely successful due to other classes doing cosplay cafés and food stalls.
With preparations for the culture festival well underway, Taiga gives Ami a box of Macarons as a sign of good faith so that she’ll let her play the lead part in their pro wrestling show when her father comes by to watch. Minori on the other hand isn’t fond of Taiga getting back on good terms with her father, and gets into an argument about it with Ryuuji. After getting comforted unexpectedly by Ami, Ryuuji goes home and finds out that Taiga’s moving in with her father. On the day of the festival, things go surprisingly well for the pro wrestling show aside from a brief interruption from Koigakuba-sensei and Taiga fumbling one of her lines. Afterwards, Ryuuji is wondering when Taiga’s father’s going to come by and watch one of their shows where Taiga takes the lead role. However, Taiga tells him to be more concerned about his situation with Minori, suggesting that he hurry up and apologize to her. By the end of the day though, Taiga’s father never comes by and she never gets a chance to take the lead role in their show.
With Taiga and her father finally making up at the end of the last episode, surely it's going to be a "happily ever after" story as far as her family is concerned from now on? At least, that's how Ryuuji sees the situation, but nobody else really seems to agree - Is he just being naive?
Certainly, Minori seems to think so, leading to some major tension and a full-blown row between the two, with both parties revealing a passion that we really haven't seen from either of them, and leaving them both refusing to speak to one another -which, of course, mortifies Ryuuji. However, it appears that he has an unlikely ally in Ami - Not the kind of girl to give you words of comfort, but seemingly happy to give him a push in the right direction and support him in her own unique way, which isn't something we would have expected from her even a couple of episodes ago.
Of course, all of this is played against the backdrop of the culture festival, and Taiga and Ryuuji's class' pro-Wrestling musical drama. If the first half of the episode was perhaps a little heavy compared to your average installment of Toradora!, then the "wrestling drama" itself was hilarious, returning us to a more light-hearted place that remains as Taiga has a bit of a crepe crisis. Putting all of that to one side however, is Taiga's father really going to turn up to the cultural festival as promised, or was Minori right in her scathing opinion of him?
